Reflection on Genius Hour (Sept 29th)

What you learned about your topic?
This week I learned a LOT about my topic! I decided that in order to show my story and to present my Genius Hour to the class I am going to use PREZI! I have already started working on my prezi and I am quite happy with how it looks. I have already added an inspirational video and added some strong statistics. I learned how dangerous texting and driving is and tips and tricks to stop texting and driving. If you are interested in seeing the specifics on this, you will have to wait and see my final product!

Reflect on yourself?
I am content with myself. I have taken lots of initiative to get ahead and make sure I am staying on top of things. I am very excited to show my final campaign of texting and driving!

TO-DO for next week?
I need to pair my prezi up with a script. So, what will happen is I will show my prezi and have a speech that I read in accordance to my prezi. I THINK this is going to be my TedTalk. BUT, at the same time, my prezi is going to be my FINAL way to show my project. I need to confirm with my professor that this is okay.

Reflection on Genius Hour (Sept 22)

Reflect on what I did this week?
This week I worked on quite a few things for my Genius Hour Project. To start off, I came to a final decision for my genius hour question (refer to last blog post). I am very excited about creating a campaign to stop texting and driving and cannot wait to use a variety of different tools. I want to ensure that my campaign is personal and inspiring. On top of that, I completed my Powtoon and completed my google slides power pitch. Powtoon and google slides were both 2 different computer tools that I have never used before. I am proud of myself for learning how to effectively use these programs.

Reflect on what I learned about your topic today:
Today I learned that there are lots of inspiring videos on the web that promote to not text and drive. I am going to review these videos and definately make sure they are a part of my final presentation.

Include any trouble you may have encountered:
I struggled to figure out how to embed my google slides pitch to my blog. But, with the help of my Technology class teacher, I was finally able to properly enable it.

Reflect on what questions you have from this week:
I would like my final campaign to basically be a Ted Talk. With that being said, I would like to do a speech as well as show specific videos, share statistics, and share my story. I am thinking my Ted Talk will be more like 10 minutes, I hope this is okay?

Explain where you go from here:
-I need to continue to do research on my topic
-I need to decide how I am going to show my story
-I need to figure out how I am going to engage my audience in a TedTalk even if I am not actually presenting it to the class. Maybe they can just think in their head individually as I play the video? No going into group work...

Explain what you need to do/get before next Genius Hour:
-I need to start brainstorming for my TedTalk
-I need to pick strong statistics that are effective to my audience
-I need to interview friends and family on why they text and drive. Use this at the beginning of my TedTalk
-I need to decide how I am going to show videos in my TedTalk - am I going to use the classroom and show a prezi behind me perhaps?

My Genius Hour Question

UPDATE!

I have decided what my genius hour question is going to be.

My question is "How can I create a campaign to stop texting and driving in the Halton Community?". I am very passionate about this topic because texting and driving is something that I witness everyday on the road and it is a problem that CAN be STOPPED!

I am very excited to get started on this project :)

Copyrighting the RIGHT way!

I have learned a lot about copyright after completing the digizen badge steps. Copyright means that “all rights are reserved” (Figg, Candace). What this means is that if you take something from the Internet (an idea, artifact, statistic) you must show where you received the information from. For example, you may not show a video in class without acquiring public performance rights. I learned that when I create my own image, video, sound clip, etc, that I need to give it creative commons so that others can use my information (if I want others to be able to use it that is). Also, I learned how to cite images in APA format. It would be most important to teach students that not being able to copyright does not hinder performance… because if anything it can enhance performance. Instead of students taking music and images that do not have Creative Common Licenses, they can create their own images and music. Also, it would be important to teach students how to determine if a clip or image can be legally used. Below are 2 images that are copyright-friendly and I have also cited them.
